Water Tank Grant Scheme
The water tank subsidy was introduced in the 2011 budget to support low-income families to purchase a water tank so as to relieve them from the hardship caused by restricted water supply.
Initially, families with a monthly household income ceiling of Rs. 10,000 were eligible for a grant of Rs. 3000/-. The income ceiling was increased to Rs. 15,000/- in the year 2013 and the grant was increased to Rs. 5000/- in year 2015. In the 2017/18 budget, the income ceiling for eligibility was increased from Rs. 15000/- to Rs. 25,000/-. In 2018/2019, the household income was further increased to Rs.30,000/-. In year 2019, the income eligibility threshold was anew increased to Rs. 50,000/- and the grant has been increased to Rs. 8000/- to cover the purchase of a water tank for a maximum amount of Rs. 5,000/- and a domestic water pump for an amount of Rs.3,000/-.
In the Budget speech 2023/2024, the grant for water tank has been increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 and extended to households with a monthly income of less than Rs 60,000.
